Flap Barrier Turnstile Installation in Dubai — What to Expect

A complete guide to flap barrier turnstile installation in Dubai — site survey, cabling, integration, commissioning, and what questions to ask your supplier.

What Is a Flap Barrier Turnstile?

A flap barrier turnstile is a pedestrian entrance control system used in corporate lobbies, office buildings, hospitals, universities, and high-traffic facilities across Dubai and the UAE. It controls who enters a space by allowing only one authorised person through per credential scan — eliminating tailgating and unauthorised access.

Modern flap barriers are made from SUS304 stainless steel, support RFID cards, biometric fingerprint readers, facial recognition, and QR code scanners via standard Wiegand 26/34 and RS485 interfaces. Top models achieve throughput of up to 30 persons per minute — suitable for even the busiest lobbies in DIFC, Business Bay, and Dubai Media City.

Step 1 — Site Survey and Layout Planning

Every successful installation starts with a proper site survey. A qualified technician will visit your premises to assess:

  • Lobby dimensions — lane width, ceiling height, floor material
  • Number of lanes required based on peak-hour pedestrian flow
  • Placement of the reception desk and security station relative to the turnstiles
  • Floor coring or cable trunking routes for power and data cabling
  • Emergency exit requirements and evacuation lane configuration

According to Dubai Civil Defence guidelines, access-controlled lobby entrances must include a lane that opens automatically during fire alarms and power failures — flap barriers with fail-safe (normally open) emergency mode meet this requirement.

Step 2 — Cabling and Civil Works

Flap barrier turnstiles require power (typically 110–240V AC) and data cabling for the access control reader interface. If the lobby floor is marble, granite, or tiled, the installer will core the floor to route cables neatly — avoiding surface-mounted conduits that look unprofessional in premium lobbies.

Civil works typically include:

  • Floor coring for power and data cables
  • Installation of cable trays or conduit from the electrical distribution board
  • Provision of a nearby network switch or RS485 bus connection to the access controller
  • Earthing / grounding of the stainless steel cabinet

Plan for 1–2 days of civil works for a standard 2–3 lane installation in a typical Dubai commercial lobby.

Step 3 — Turnstile Assembly and Mounting

Flap barrier cabinets are heavy (typically 60–120 kg per lane) and require a level floor surface. The installation team will:

  • Position and align each lane precisely using laser levels
  • Anchor the cabinet to the floor using expansion bolts
  • Connect internal wiring — power supply, flap motor, PCB controller
  • Mount the access control reader (RFID / biometric) on the top housing

For premium glass flap barriers with LED lighting, additional care is taken to avoid scratching panels during positioning. Most flap barrier installations in Dubai are completed within one working day once civil works are done.

Step 4 — Access Control Integration and Programming

Once physically installed, the turnstile is wired to your access control panel. The installer will:

  • Program entry/exit relay outputs on the controller
  • Enrol employee RFID cards or fingerprints in the system
  • Configure anti-passback zones if required
  • Set alarm outputs for tailgating detection
  • Test emergency mode — confirming barriers open on fire alarm signal

If you are integrating with an existing building management system or visitor management platform, ensure your supplier confirms protocol compatibility (Wiegand, RS485, or TCP/IP) before installation day.

Step 5 — Testing, Commissioning and Handover

The final stage covers full-system testing:

  • Valid credential → barrier opens and closes correctly
  • Invalid credential → barrier stays closed and alarm sounds
  • Tailgate detection test
  • Emergency / fire alarm integration test
  • Manual override and key unlock test

A professional supplier will provide a commissioning report and staff training on daily operations and fault-clearing procedures. Ensure you receive wiring diagrams and the controller admin login credentials at handover.
