Access Control Glossary
Plain-English definitions of every term you will encounter when specifying, buying, or installing access control systems in Dubai and the UAE.
Access Control System
A security system that manages and restricts who can enter or exit a building, room, or area. It combines hardware (locks, readers, controllers) and software to authenticate users via cards, fingerprints, PINs, or mobile credentials.
Electromagnetic Lock (EM Lock / Maglock)
A locking device that uses an electromagnet to hold a door shut. When electrical current flows through the magnet mounted on the door frame, it attracts an armature plate on the door with hundreds of kilograms of holding force. Cutting the power releases the door. Common holding forces: 280 kg (600 lbs) and 600 kg (1,200 lbs).
Holding Force
The maximum force (measured in kilograms or pounds) that an electromagnetic lock can resist before releasing. A 280 kg lock withstands 280 kg of pull force. Higher holding force = more resistance to forced entry. Standard office doors use 280 kg; high-security applications use 600 kg+.
Armature Plate
A metal plate (usually mild steel) mounted on the door that connects magnetically with the EM lock body on the door frame. The magnetic attraction between the two creates the holding force that keeps the door locked.
Fail-Safe Lock
A lock that releases (unlocks) automatically when power is cut. Electromagnetic locks are inherently fail-safe — a power failure or fire alarm signal will release the door so occupants can exit safely. Required by fire safety regulations on emergency exit doors.
Fail-Secure Lock
A lock that remains locked when power is cut. Electric strikes can be configured as fail-secure for high-security areas where you want the door to stay locked during a power outage. Not suitable for emergency exit doors.
Electric Strike Lock
A door locking device that replaces the fixed strike plate on a door frame. When activated, it releases the latch or bolt to allow the door to open without turning the handle from outside. Can be configured as fail-safe (power off = unlocked) or fail-secure (power off = locked). Works with standard mechanical handles.
Biometric Reader
An access control device that identifies users through physical characteristics — most commonly fingerprints, but also face recognition, iris scans, or palm vein patterns. Eliminates the need for cards or PINs. Ideal for offices where card management is a challenge or attendance tracking is needed.
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)
A contactless technology used in access control cards and fobs. A reader emits a radio signal; when a card enters its range, the card transmits its unique ID. Two common frequencies: 125 kHz (EM4100 — older, less secure) and 13.56 MHz (Mifare — more secure, supports encryption). The reader sends the ID to the access controller which decides whether to unlock the door.
Access Control Panel / Controller
The brain of an access control system. It receives signals from readers, checks credentials against a database of allowed users, and sends unlock signals to locks. Can manage single doors (standalone) or multiple doors across a building (networked). Networked controllers connect via TCP/IP for cloud or server-based management.
Wiegand Protocol
The most common communication standard between an access control reader and a controller. Transmits card ID data as a one-way electrical signal. Widely supported but lacks encryption, making it susceptible to relay attacks in high-security environments. Being replaced by OSDP (Open Supervised Device Protocol) in modern installations.
REX (Request to Exit)
A signal or device that tells the access controller someone is legitimately exiting. Can be triggered by a push button (exit button), a PIR motion sensor, or a touchless wave sensor. Prevents the system from logging a door forced open alarm when someone exits normally.
Smart Door Lock
A WiFi or Bluetooth-enabled electronic lock that replaces a traditional deadbolt or mortise lock. Controlled via smartphone app, fingerprint, PIN, or RFID card. Popular in apartments, villas, and hotel rooms. Does not require a separate access controller — the lock has built-in intelligence.
Flap Barrier Turnstile
A waist-height pedestrian access control gate with retractable wing panels (flaps). Used in office lobbies, metro stations, and corporate entrances. Opens and closes smoothly when a valid credential is presented. Available in single-lane, dual-lane, and glass-wing variants. Deters tailgating while maintaining an elegant appearance.
Speed Gate
A high-speed version of the flap barrier with faster opening times (typically under 0.2 seconds). Used in high-throughput environments such as hotel lobbies, airports, and headquarters. Features full-height glass wings for an upscale appearance. Higher cost than standard flap barriers.
Swing Barrier
A pedestrian gate with wide glass panels that swing open. Unlike flap barriers with retractable wings, swing barriers have full-width panels providing a more imposing physical barrier. Suitable for wheelchair and trolley access. Used in offices, banks, and luxury buildings.
Tripod Turnstile
A waist-height turnstile with three rotating arms that allow one person through per valid credential. Cost-effective and durable. Widely used in construction sites, labour camps, warehouses, and factories. Does not provide a physical barrier against determined intruders but reliably controls and counts pedestrian flow.
Full Height Turnstile
A floor-to-ceiling rotating turnstile that provides maximum physical security. Unlike waist-height turnstiles, it completely blocks passage until unlocked — preventing climbing or jumping. Used in high-security perimeters, prisons, government facilities, and outdoor industrial sites.
Boom Barrier
An automated horizontal arm (boom) that rises and falls to control vehicle entry and exit at car parks, compounds, and facilities. Triggered by RFID cards, loop detectors, remote controls, or access control systems. Arm lengths typically range from 3 to 6 metres for single-lane or dual-lane coverage.
Drop Arm Barrier
A pedestrian access control barrier with an arm that drops vertically (rather than rotating like a tripod). Provides a discreet yet effective passage control mechanism. Used in subway stations, cashier queues, and managed entrances where space is limited.
Tailgating / Piggybacking
When an unauthorised person follows an authorised person through an access-controlled door or gate without presenting credentials. Flap barriers and speed gates are specifically designed to detect and prevent tailgating using infrared sensors.
Anti-Passback
A feature in access control systems that prevents a credential from being used to enter the same area twice without first exiting. Stops one person from handing their card back to another person to gain entry. Requires both entry and exit readers.
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
A security method requiring two forms of verification to gain access — for example, a card plus a PIN, or a fingerprint plus a card. Significantly increases security compared to single-factor systems. Common in data centres, server rooms, and finance departments.
